Trend Alert: Cocktail Wedding Reception

The challenge: sticking to a reasonable budget, keeping all of the beautiful details and making sure all of your guests have a great time.  Sounds pretty straight forward, but so many of our couples get into the planning process and realize their budget falls short of all their hopes and dreams.  Most, having never planned a wedding before and often unfamiliar with the usual costs of each of the necessary vendors to pull off a great day.

Recently, one of may very savvy brides shared with me her approach to having a fabulous day while not breaking her bank account, or her parents’.  It struck me as incredibly smart and I can really see this trend taking hold.

Rather than a full sit down dinner for her reception, she chose to have a cocktail reception.  Immediately following her ceremony, guests were invited to leisurely lounge and mix while a menu of wonderful appetizers were tray passed by strolling waiters, as they sipped some good California wine.  Cocktail tables (30″ high boys) were set up on the lawn in the garden with small elegant centerpieces.  A live jazz band played throughout, a beautiful cake was cut, family and friends thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the Bride and Groom headed out at about 9 pm.

I love the relaxed, yet swank approach that this brings to a day that is often shrouded in formalness, assigned table seating, strict timeline and heavy tradition.  Think about bit sized elegance, cocktail napkins, maybe a signature cocktail, a wine bar, fewer hours of entertainment, no china rental and a clever spin on tradition.  Added bonus: some serious “green points”.

Be sure to work with an awesome caterer that features an innovative appetizer menu and isn’t afraid to create something just for you.  Many of my favorite caterers in the area can also create sweet or savory stations that your guests will completely swoon over.  These are a few of my very favorite caterers in our area that I would trust implicitly with such a feat:  The guys over at Two Cooks Catering not only feature wonderful bites, but their staff is first class.  Jennie over at Trumpet Vine Catering offers up a personal touch and stunning presentations while being absolutely flavorful.  The team at Epic Weddings @CateringUnlimited.com can create whatever your heart desires, and setting a new trend themselves, with a decadent wedding brunch menu.  Check out some great ideas for a personal touch and new signature cocktail ideas on Wedding Ideas Now.

Get creative, have fun and enjoy!

Trends: Vintage Inspired Details I

It’s everywhere right now – and we hear these buzz words for every other bride we meet with, we’ve spun it into our own style segment named after one of our favorite stores – Anthropologie Chic.  Recently we were introduced to someone who is creating a true style statement in the world of wedding accessories – and doing it with finesse!  When we were asked to contribute some funky vintage bouquets to the photo shoot recently, I almost fell off the floor with sheer delight.  Lo Boheme is leading the way with beautifully styled vintage details for brides to wear as head pieces, belts, gloves and accoutrement.  All put together with with attention to intricate detail, Lauren Christensen searches secret haunts for vintage veils, jewelry and feathers [be still my heart!].  She sells her one of a kind pieces on her online Etsy store.

These photos are from the photo shoot for Lauren’s spring line shot locally at one of our very favorite venue finds: The Sanitarium.  The masterful Mike Larson and Sophie Murdoch at Mike Larson Inc. snagged these pics – keep your eyes peeled – you will see them in one of your favorite wedding magazines or blogs very soon!

Check out the stunning hair and makeup in these images as well – from Reeda Gorham and Skylae Johnson both from Faces & AlaMode here in SLO town. Laura Robertson from Touch Of Style Events, one of our very favorite wedding coordinators and style maven in her own right, helped bring all of the intricate pieces together for the shoot – including handling the doves.

Trends: are your blooms in or out?

The wonderful Preston Bailey recently posted some interesting information about the blooms that he is most asked for by his clients from around the globe.  Pretty interesting stuff when you think about trends.  I happen to think that designed well, almost anything can be beautiful and stunning – the right application is key.

These are Preston’s results: (remember he is on the other coast) along with my own notes on what we’re doing going into wedding season on the beautiful Central Coast.

  • Roses – In: I’m especially in love with the big voluptuous English Garden roses we’re getting from a variety of growers in California.  We often substitute them for peonies when they are out of season.  Added benefit – they smell amazing!

Favorite bridal bloom

  • Amaryllis – In: We like them best in “over the top” bridal bouquets or in ultra clean and modern centerpieces in a minimalist vase.  This also happens to be my favorite Christmas gift to give – in bulb form.

  • Tulips – In: (especially parrots) Admittedly, I do have a serious thing with parrot tulips – I try to suggest them as much as possible – the dark midnight red ones are my absolute favorite – followed in a very close second to the green ones.  They remind me of the old Dutch painter’s iconic still life paintings – the ones I “doddle” over in a museum as my husband is trying to move on.

  • Dahlias – Out: We actually have seen a consistent interest in dahlias for weddings in the mid to late season.  We work the dark bordeaux ones into winery wedding  bouquets and our new favorite are the button ones (white) that are so exquisite in shape.  These are also locally grown and really cut our carbon foot print as we don’t have to ship them in.

For more incredible event and trend tips and design, be sure to visit Preston Baily’s blog – or better yet, check out his books.  They are all incredible – of course my copies are all personally autographed I’m happy to share!
